August 2010
By way of introduction, I am Allan Kaufman, the Director of Training
for this organization. The information that follows is for anyone interested in becoming a High School
basketball official for the 2010-11 season. The first tentative class will be on September 14.
This is a 3-page document.
· Our training program is a 2-year program. After successful completion of the first year, you
will be eligible to officiate non-varsity level games, including recreational league games as well. After
successfully completing your second year, you will be varsity eligible. This means that after our senior
members work with you in games and observe your performance on the court, you will be given the NJSIAA state patch which signifies
that you are eligible to work varsity games. Getting your varsity patch does not guarantee you a varsity schedule, but does
allow you to be asked to officiate varsity level games during your third year as an official.
· The training program will take place on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 7:00 pm until
9:30 pm. The training will take place at East Brunswick High School.
· Classes will run through the middle of November when you
will take the final exam. There are no classes during the week of November 1st.
·
Each class will cover selected rules and our
time on the basketball court will enable you to learn the mechanics of becoming a successful official.
·
You will also be required
to observe senior members of our organization as they work varsity games during the season. Observing varsity officials work
pre-season scrimmages is not mandatory but encouraged.
· As part of your ongoing training, you will be provided with officiating assignments in conjunction
with school scrimmages as well as with the East Brunswick Boys Fast Break basketball league. Our organization’s
officials will observe your performance and provide you with feedback on your work. There maybe an opportunity
for you to work middle school games with a tenured official as part of your training.
·
The cost for program is $250.
The cost covers the following: First year class fees ($125) the required training manuals and rule
books ($25), the organizational membership dues ($100) for the 2010-2011 season and the annual banquet (Free to members).
If you do not pass the class your membership dues of $100 will be refunded. There is no
class fee for the 2nd year of classes.
· You will also be asked to attend a number of our membership meetings once you pass the class.
We have a meeting set for early December (date to be determined) and a mandatory meeting set for Sunday,
December 12 at 8:00 am. Our banquet meeting is in March and there is no fee to attend.
· We do all of our corresponding via email. It is important
that you check your email routinely as class and/or organizational information is routed this way.
I would be remiss if I did not comment on your responsibilities as a student.
You are expected to attend classes and be prepared to take a quiz on the work that is reviewed. These
will be “take home” quizzes that are meant to reinforce what is learned in the classroom. You
are also expected to be prepared to review any class assignments, ask questions and be prepared to apply the rules to various
situations. You must obtain an overall weighted score of 85% on the final exam in order for you to pass
the class. Based on past experiences, if you do not attend the classes, do not plan on passing this part
of the class.
In addition to the classroom work, we are planning to spend a number of sessions “on
the court” working on the mechanics of the game. This on court experience will also be part of your
final exam. You need to be proficient on the court for a first year student and pass the written exam to
have successfully completed the first year studies.
We are looking for those individuals who are dedicated to becoming the
best officials not only within the organization, but also within the NJSIAA. We do not give you
the rule book, ask you to read it and then give you the answers to the exams and expect you to become an official.
We take pride in our program and expect much out of our students.
This may seem like of information
to absorb, however, it is important for you to know that we do a very thorough job of preparing you for your time on the court.
We have the best training program in the state and while you will work hard you will, in the end, become a very good
official.
If you are interested in coming into our organization, please complete the application
below and return it with your payment of $250 (Checks made out to CEJBO).
